Septic on Rural Lewis County Properties: Centralia, Chehalis & Farm Land

Open green rural field with scattered trees under a blue sky

Lewis County is farm and timber country, and septic systems on rural property live by different rules than the ones in town. Bigger lots, older systems, livestock, mature trees, and — around Centralia and Chehalis especially — a river that has a long history of flooding all change what it takes to keep a system healthy.

Flood-prone ground near the Chehalis River

If your property sits in the Chehalis River floodplain, flooding is the septic risk that matters most. When floodwater saturates or submerges a drain field, the field can't absorb effluent and the system can back up. After any significant flooding it's worth having the system checked before you lean on it hard again.

  • Before a forecast flood, avoid heavy water use so the tank has capacity
  • Don't pump the tank while the ground is saturated or flooded — an empty tank can float or shift in waterlogged soil
  • After floodwaters recede, have the tank and field inspected before returning to normal use

Farm and acreage systems

On working land, the everyday risks are different. Heavy equipment and vehicles compact the soil and can crush drain-field pipes, so the field needs to be marked and kept clear of tractors, trailers, and livestock. Mature trees along fence lines send roots toward drain lines. And older rural systems are often overdue simply because they're out of sight, out of mind.

  • Keep vehicles, equipment, and livestock off the drain field
  • Watch tree lines near the system for root intrusion
  • Don't let an out-of-the-way system go years without a look
