Septic Do's and Don'ts: A Homeowner's Guide

Most septic problems we get called out for trace back to a handful of everyday habits, not bad luck. None of this is complicated — it just isn't always obvious.

Do

  • Have your tank pumped every 3–5 years (sooner for larger households or heavy garbage disposal use)
  • Spread out laundry and heavy water use across the week instead of all at once
  • Keep a record of when the tank was last pumped and inspected
  • Know where your tank and drain field are located

Don't flush

  • Wipes of any kind — including ones labeled "flushable"
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Dental floss
  • Cigarette butts
  • Cat litter or diapers

If it isn't human waste or toilet paper, it doesn't belong in the system. These items don't break down the way a septic system needs them to, and they're one of the most common causes of clogs and backups we see.

Don't pour down the drain

  • Cooking grease or oil — let it harden and throw it in the trash instead
  • Coffee grounds
  • Harsh household chemicals in large quantities

Keep your drain field clear

Drain fields aren't built to handle weight or impermeable surfaces. Don't park cars or drive equipment over the field — it compacts the soil and can crush the pipes underneath. Don't build a deck, shed, or pour concrete or asphalt over it either, since that blocks the oxygen and evaporation the field needs to actually work. And when planting nearby, keep large trees and shrubs with aggressive root systems away from the lines.

None of this requires special equipment or a monthly routine — it's mostly just paying attention to what goes down the drain and staying off the field. Combined with regular pumping, it's the difference between a system that lasts decades and one that needs expensive repairs way ahead of schedule.
